Bilingualism

Bilingualism at the Nido Scuola Clorofilla means approaching the English language like many pedagogical and educational methods do: by focusing on children’s growth and learning.

Opportunities for children here at Nido Scuola Clorofilla

Nido Scuola Clorofilla is a bilingual school with an educational team made up of native English-speaking and bilingual teachers, who give children the opportunity to experience an international and multicultural environment.
English language is taught even more as the children transition from nursery school to preschool: the native English speakers and bilingual teachers become even more of a daily reference point for the children, who acquire important language skills through their experiences, games and relationships that they experience every day at school.
As such, the children are fully immersed in a rich English-speaking environment all day long. After attending Clorofilla preschool for three years, children leaving kindergarten demonstrate an almost complete level of English comprehension. How much a child speaks, on the other hand, depends entirely on him or her. Language acquisition takes time, and many children don’t speak and show what they’ve learned in preschool. In addition, children often don’t demonstrate their speaking skills until they’ve started attending primary school.
In addition to language acquisition, we are aware that as a bilingual school we allow children the opportunity to learn not only language, but important aspects related to language such as culture, openness to others and the world around them. Attending a bilingual school gives children the possibility to experience an international and multilingual environment, which opens them up to new experiences and allows them to develop a flexible mind, capable of finding communicative strategies even in contexts that are not always immediately comprehensible. Learning a second language from childhood means opening up to different cultures and getting to know them, learning about different traditions and histories. In addition, children learn different ideas, new ways of speaking, interpreting and understanding the world, eating habits, and talking to others.

Why it’s so important to learn English as a child

There are many studies that show that learning a second language as a child means learning early on to see things from a perspective that is not just our own. This is because a bilingual child has to ‘choose’ a language every time he speaks according to the speaker in front of him or her. There is another advantage to being bilingual: the fact of being bilingual makes it necessary to exercise selective attention at all times. It is necessary to ‘inhibit’ a language in order to be able to speak other languages, and this allows children to develop the ability to concentrate, which consists of selecting what to concentrate on and ignoring facts that are irrelevant at any given moment.
